The Met Office has warned that air quality in the Maldives will remain dangerous for the next five days, particularly in the northern atolls and the Malé region.
The Met Office said strong winds are affecting the country today, contributing to poor air conditions.
According to IQAir, Malé’s air quality index stands at 111, with dust levels measured at 39.8 micrograms per cubic meter, eight times higher than the World Health Organization’s safe limit.
The Health Protection Agency said air quality between 101 and 150 poses a high risk, especially for people with respiratory illnesses. Infants, the elderly and pregnant women are among the most vulnerable.
Authorities advise wearing N95 masks when going outdoors and avoiding unnecessary travel.
