The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has launched an investigation into online pages selling medicines without required permits.
MFDA said several online sellers are importing and advertising medicines without approval from the authority.
It noted that semaglutide, a drug used to control blood sugar and commonly promoted for weight loss, is being sold illegally online. MFDA also flagged azelaic acid, used to treat skin conditions, which is being advertised as a skin-brightening product.
The authority warned that such medicines should only be used when necessary and on the advice of a specialist doctor. MFDA said pharmacies may dispense these drugs only with a valid prescription.
It cautioned that using medicines without medical supervision can cause serious health risks.
MFDA said it will take action against those who import and sell unregistered medicines or drugs not approved for sale in the Maldives.
