The government has disbursed MVR 27.3 million to 40 independent media outlets as financial support from the state budget.
The funds were issued through the Finance Ministry after the outlets met eligibility criteria set by the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission (MMBC). A total of 41 outlets qualified, but two were operated by the same company, so support was given to 40 media organizations.
MMBC said the total amount released was MVR 27,295,532.69.
President Muizzu had earlier pledged to address the challenges faced by the media during a post-election meeting with journalists. This marks the first time the Maldivian state has provided direct financial assistance to private media outlets.
