The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) has said the acquittal of Ameen Construction in a high-profile money laundering case violates the law and will be appealed.
The PGO said the Criminal Court cleared Ameen Construction in breach of judicial procedures. The office confirmed it will file an appeal at the High Court.
The case is linked to the purchase of a penthouse on Amin Avenue by former Football Association of Maldives (FAM) president Bassam Adeel Jaleel. Bassam was found guilty of embezzlement and sentenced to 23 years in prison.
Despite Bassam’s conviction, the Criminal Court ruled Ameen Construction not guilty. The PGO said this decision contradicts legal standards.
Ameen Construction faces charges of aiding and abetting money laundering. Prosecutors allege the company used USD 1 million in FIFA funds to purchase the penthouse apartment.
