Parliament has approved the appointment of Dr. Aishath Rameela as the new President of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
Dr. Rameela, who was appointed as a member of the HRCM in December, was elevated to the presidency following parliamentary approval on a proposal submitted by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on August 3. The Parliament’s Human Rights and Gender Committee endorsed her appointment.
The decision passed unanimously, with all 38 lawmakers present voting in favour. Dr. Rameela replaces Mariyam Muna, whose term as a commission member expired.
The HRCM currently consists of five members, including Vice President Mohamed Shafeeq Mahmood and members Samau Ahmed Najeeb, Ismail Habeeb, and Ahmed Mausoom.
