Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has announced that the land reclamation project for the development of an airport in Dhidhdhoo is set to commence tomorrow, marking a major milestone in the country’s aviation infrastructure development.
The project was a key promise during Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s campaign. During his visit to Dhidhdhoo in April, the President assured residents that the airport would be completed soon, bringing new opportunities and improved connectivity to the island.
MACL will utilize the world’s largest dredger, Liv Ericsson, for the project. The dredger, capable of pumping 46,000 cubic meters of sand at a time, is the third brought in by the government to accelerate land reclamation projects across the Maldives. A total of 102.70 hectares of land will be reclaimed under this initiative.
The government has been making significant efforts to fast-track development projects across the country. Reclamation works for Hulhumalé Phase 3 and Rasmalé Phase 3 are already progressing at a fast pace with the support of two other large dredgers provided by MACL.
Dhidhdhoo, a densely populated island currently facing land shortages, is expected to benefit greatly from the new airport project, which promises to bring economic opportunities, improved transport links, and satisfaction to local residents.
