Government Revises Housing Policy, Allows One-Room Flat Holders to Reapply

The government has revised its housing allocation policy for Malé City, allowing some recipients of one-room flats to apply for alternative housing under new conditions.

Under the government’s housing programme, 7,500 flats will be built in the Greater Malé Region and distributed to two groups: residents of Malé City and residents of other islands currently living in the capital.

According to the updated policy released by the Ministry of Housing, applicants who received a one-room flat and have children under 18 may reapply if released under a government policy. Households living in two-room flats with children of both genders under 18 will also be eligible to apply again.

The change follows concerns raised by the President during a recent meeting with Malé residents, as well as requests from some Hiyaa flat recipients seeking flexibility to apply for new housing schemes.

The Housing Ministry will determine the number of rooms allocated based on applicants’ living conditions. While applicants may state a preference for two- or three-room flats, the final decision will be made after evaluation.

Housing allocations will be based on a points system, with a maximum of 175 points, taking into account factors such as length of registration in Malé, including additional points for those registered from birth or for long-term residency.
