The government has waived fines for non-payment of rent for Hiyaa flats in Hulhumalé Phase II, easing the burden on residents.
Housing Development Corporation (HDC) Managing Director Ali Zuhair said the waived fines, totaling MVR 1.9 million, apply from 1 January 2019 and include 2023 arrears.
Monthly rent for each Hiyaa apartment is MVR 3,984, with a MVR 1,000 maintenance fee, totaling MVR 4,984 per month.
HDC noted that only 3,000 of 8,000 social housing units in Hulhumalé are paying rent, leaving unpaid rent exceeding MVR 700 million.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu waived the fines during a meeting with residents and contributed MVR 200,000 for finishing costs. He also promised relief for those facing backlogs of unpaid rent.
