President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has confirmed that all 300 new three-bedroom flats planned for Villimalé will go only to island residents.
Muizzu announced the decision during a community meeting in Villimalé. He said construction will begin this year as part of the Greater Malé housing plan.
He highlighted ongoing work to upgrade Hulhumalé Hospital to a tertiary facility. He said the government will manage service disruptions and asked for public support.He also also outlined new projects: road upgrades, utility improvements, a multi-sports complex next year, and a USD ATM.
Construction Minister Dr. Abdulla Muththalib said environmental protection is a priority. He confirmed there are no plans to allow motorised vehicles even after the bridge is completed.
The government signed an agreement to redevelop Masjid Al-Salaam. Muizzu also ordered the removal of two ageing trees after residents raised concerns.
Residents asked for better ferries, improved transport, an upgraded swimming area, a fish market, and a development corporation.
Muizzu said Villimalé will not be overlooked and pledged to deliver long-awaited improvements.
