President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the wisdom, foresight, and enduring legacy of Dhonbandaarain continue to live on in the Maldives, nearly three centuries after the historic national liberation.
The President made the remarks in a message shared on his official X account to mark Huravee Day. In the message, he reflected on the sombre events that led to the battle to free the nation from foreign occupation 281 years ago. He recalled the resistance against the treachery that saw parts of Malé set ablaze, the monarch of the time abducted, and the Maldivian people subjected to severe suffering.
He noted that the spirit demonstrated during this pivotal moment in history remains a guiding force for the nation, shaping its identity and strengthening its resolve to protect sovereignty. The President concluded by extending Huravee Day greetings to the Maldivian people and offering prayers for the country’s continued prosperity, stability, and progress.
First Lady Sajidha Mohamed also issued a message to mark the occasion. She conveyed her greetings to the public and expressed deep gratitude for the immense national sacrifice made by Dhonbandaarain, highlighting its lasting significance in shaping the Maldivian nation and its identity.
Huravee Day is observed annually on the third day of Jumad al Akhirah. The day commemorates the historic liberation of the Maldives and serves to rekindle national courage, strengthen patriotism, and reaffirm pride and resilience in safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and national identity.
