President Muizzu orders further action against three employees following parliamentary review
Two Deputy Commissioners of Maldives Customs have been dismissed over a case involving the smuggling of cigarettes into the country.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced the decision on Thursday. He said the dismissals were linked to the smuggling of cigarettes onboard an oil tanker owned by Hawkes, and the illegal release of cigarettes from a bonded warehouse.
The dismissed officials are Abdulla Waheed and Mahmood Riyaz.
The President also ordered action against three other Customs employees connected to the same case.
According to President Muizzu, the decision followed a review by the Parliament’s Committee on National Security Services (241 Committee). The committee investigated the case and submitted its findings to him.
The report, passed by Parliament on November 27, recommends reforms to four state institutions, including the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation. It also calls for stronger policies to improve oversight and enforcement within Maldives Customs.
President Muizzu said the government will continue to uphold accountability and transparency in all state institutions.
