The government has handed over the Komandoo airport project to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), with land reclamation already underway.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu attended the ceremony Tuesday night. Finance Minister Moosa Zameer signed on behalf of the government, while MACL Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed signed for the company.
The project includes land reclamation, runway construction, and building the airport terminal. MACL will also operate and manage the airport once completed.
Sh. Komandoo currently has no airport. The handover follows a similar ceremony for Sh. Bilehfahi airport yesterday. The only existing airport in Sh. Atoll is in its capital, Funadhoo.
The new airports aim to improve transportation, connect remote islands, and boost economic growth, benefiting residents, businesses, and travelers. MACL’s decades of experience will ensure the facilities meet international standards.
