The World Health Organization (WHO) has validated the Maldives for eliminating mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis B, making it the first country in the world to achieve “triple elimination.”
The country had previously earned validation in 2019 for eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis.
WHO said the milestone reflects decades of public health investment and strong political will. More than 95% of pregnant women in the Maldives receive antenatal care and testing for HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B, while all newborns are fully immunized.
Health officials said the Maldives will continue to strengthen digital health, laboratory systems, and outreach to migrant communities to sustain progress.
