Police have defended their use of force to disperse the MDP protest in Malé on October 3.
Participants tried to move into Majeedhee Magu against the agreed route. Police said protesters ignored repeated instructions and warnings. Protesters dismantled barricades, threw them at officers, and attempted to seize shields. One shield was taken, which police called unlawful.
Police said the protest lost its peaceful nature under the Freedom of Assembly Act. They added that protesters entered areas not designated for gatherings.
Police stated they acted with patience and professionalism. They said force was used only as allowed under the Police Service Act and related regulations. Authorities affirmed they followed all principles on the lawful use of force.
