The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) says it has ordered the recovery of MVR 123.7 million linked to the MMPRC corruption scandal, the biggest in Maldivian history.
The ACC said 37 investigations are still ongoing. Another 161 cases are completed and at the decision stage. 15 cases are with the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) for prosecution.
So far, MVR 123,732,662 has been marked for recovery.
The PGO said last night it told the ACC on 15 January to cancel agreements that shielded some individuals from prosecution. It also ordered the ACC to speed up the probes and submit them. Yesterday, the PGO told the Commission to present a progress proposal before 8 October. It confirmed charges are being prepared in one embezzlement case.
The MMPRC scandal saw massive funds embezzled under then Vice President Ahmed Adeeb and MMPRC Managing Director Abdulla Ziyath. Both were convicted. But three days before leaving office, former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih pardoned them.
The ACC said it is working independently and impartially. It pledged to push forward investigations “to the fullest extent possible.”
