The National Integrity Commission (NIC) launched an investigation into claims that police used excessive force during a protest outside the People’s Majlis last Tuesday. The protest opposed the proposed Media Regulation Bill.
NIC said it will review whether police violated laws or regulations when dispersing the crowd. Police have denied the claims. They said their Professional Standards Command is also reviewing officers’ conduct.
Police insisted they acted lawfully to stop an unlawful assembly and protect MPs and the public. They said protesters broke security lines and obstructed operations. Police maintained that they used only the minimum force needed.
Police also dismissed photos circulating online, saying they were taken from selective angles to mislead the public and distort the truth.
