Every year, the first day of Rabi’ul Awwal is commemorated as the Maldives’ proud “National Day”. This day is observed to commemorate the victory that liberated the Maldives from Portuguese occupation after 15 years and 6 months, and to honor and remember Sultan Al-Ghazi Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al-A’uzam Siri Savaaditta Mahaaradun or Utheemu Bandaarain, and the brave Maldivian warriors who participated in that jihad.
