Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) and the Ministry of Finance and Planning have signed an agreement to develop a new airport in Mathiveri, marking a major step in expanding regional connectivity.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed Tuesday during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s atoll tour. MACL CEO and Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed signed on behalf of the company, while State Minister Hussain Imran represented the Finance Ministry.

President Muizzu described the Mathiveri Airport project as a key campaign pledge, emphasizing that the facility will be financially sustainable, improve travel across the atoll, and create new opportunities for the tourism sector.
He also assured residents that construction will be completed and the airport fully operational within two and a half years, reinforcing the government’s commitment to developing infrastructure in the country’s outer islands.
