Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has entered into a formal partnership with the Ministry of Sports, Fitness, and Recreation to develop fitness and recreation centers on 63 islands across the Maldives. This initiative, aligned with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s development agenda, seeks to enhance community health and encourage active lifestyles nationwide.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed during a ceremony at H. Meeru Maa. MACL’s Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, represented the company, while Sports Minister Abdullah Rafiu signed on behalf of the government.
Speaking at the event, Shareef emphasized the importance of the collaboration, stating that the project underscores MACL’s commitment to national well being. “It is an honor for MACL to contribute to fulfilling President Muizzu’s pledge of establishing fitness centers on all inhabited islands by 2026, promoting the physical fitness and overall health of Maldivian citizens,” he said.
Government data indicates that the Ministry of Sports has already allocated the development of 87 fitness and recreation centers to state owned enterprises and private sector partners. MACL’s participation is expected to accelerate the rollout, bringing modern facilities and structured fitness programs closer to island communities.
The broader government vision is to make fitness resources accessible to all Maldivians, bridge health gaps between urban and rural areas, and support long term public health improvements. The nationwide expansion of sports and recreation infrastructure is also projected to generate opportunities for youth engagement, talent development, and local employment.
Through this partnership with the Ministry, MACL extends its corporate social responsibility efforts beyond aviation services into community development. The collaboration positions the company as a significant contributor to national health initiatives, supporting President Muizzu’s pledge to transform every inhabited island into a hub for fitness and recreation by 2026.
