Malé, 07 August 2025 – Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has pledged that any future changes at Malé North Harbor will be made in close collaboration with the local fishing community.

Since taking over management of the harbor in June, MPL now oversees the Malé Commercial Port, North Harbor, and the adjoining fish market area up to the local market crossroads. The company has already begun upgrading facilities in the fishermen’s zone and is holding regular meetings to gather their feedback.

During the first consultation, MPL CEO Mohamed Rishwan promised to work alongside fishermen to address ongoing issues. Planned improvements include providing essential services such as water, electricity, ice, and fuel directly at the harbor. While some space limitations may persist until 2027, measures are being taken immediately to reduce congestion and streamline daily operations.

Deputy CEO Mohamed Mueen emphasized that changes will reflect fishermen’s input, including the development of a dedicated area for their activities. Additionally, two berths in Zone H will be reserved for fishing vessels arriving from other islands.

MPL also confirmed that foreign nationals will not be allowed to conduct business in the harbor, and any unauthorized goods in restricted areas will be acted upon. Safety enhancements, such as CCTV cameras and checkpoints, are also planned.

As one of Malé’s busiest ports, North Harbor handles daily cargo and passenger vessel traffic. MPL aims to make it a safer, more efficient, and fisherman-friendly hub for the Maldives.
