First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has said food safety is not only a health issue but also a reflection of a country’s development and values.

Speaking at the national ceremony marking World Food Safety Day in F. Nilandhoo, the First Lady said ensuring safe food is a national priority and a responsibility shared by both institutions and individuals.

Referring to this year’s theme, “From Burden to Solutions – Safe Food Everywhere,” she stressed the importance of building food safety awareness from an early age through schools and communities.

Sajidha also highlighted challenges faced by the Maldives in ensuring food safety, including regulatory, technical and resource-related constraints. However, she expressed confidence that new guidelines being developed under the Food Safety Act would help strengthen the sector.

During the ceremony, several food safety initiatives were launched, including the “Samaavaar” programme for food service operators. The event was attended by Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, Nilandhoo MP Fathimath Saudha and local officials.
