The works began on April 3, 2026, and were completed on May 4, taking 31 days. A total of 21 hectares of land was reclaimed, with a volume of 1,134,534 cubic metres. The operation was carried out using the dredger Queen of the Netherlands, which has a capacity of 35,000 cubic metres.
In addition, 4.9 hectares of land from the existing island was cleared to support the project. The airport project was awarded to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), with development announced on October 15, 2025, during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to the atoll.
Shaviyani Atoll currently has an airport in Funadhoo, while additional airport projects are underway in Bileiyfahi and Komandoo. Officials said these developments are expected to increase air connectivity in the atoll.
