Govt Jobs to Be Based on Merit, Not Politics: President

President Mohamed Muizzu has announced that all future government recruitment will be based strictly on education and professional experience, ending political appointments.

Speaking at his weekly press conference, the President said jobs will no longer be given based on campaign work or political ties, citing public demand for a smaller, more efficient government.

He confirmed the policy will apply across all state institutions.

The Ministry of Finance and Public Enterprises has already directed state-owned companies to cut their workforce by 33%, while ensuring operations are not disrupted. All vacancies must now be publicly advertised.

Muizzu also said political roles are being reviewed. The cabinet has already been reduced from 20 to 15 ministers, with plans to introduce minimum education requirements for future appointments.

The move signals a shift toward a more merit-based public sector.
