The government’s taxi line service has launched its hotline, but the long promised rollout is still on hold.
The “Malé Taxi Line,” run by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), has introduced 1655 as a 24/7 contact number, with an app also in the works.
Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen had earlier pledged launches in July 2025 and during Eid al-Fitr, and later before Ramadan ends . Driver recruitment is ongoing, with 407 needed, while vehicles are being imported from Thailand and China.
The service aims to fix taxi shortages in Malé, where many of the 1,500 registered cabs operate selectively.
