The Criminal Court has found former Maldives Gas Managing Director Abdulla Maumoon not guilty of five charges of accepting bribes.
Maumoon was accused of taking bribes from the state, but the court ruled that five of the charges were not proven after reviewing the evidence. The Prosecutor General’s Office said it plans to appeal the ruling at the High Court, pending receipt of the full trial report.
Maumoon was, however, found guilty on two other charges and sentenced to 12 years, nine months and 18 days in prison. Prosecutors alleged that USD 298,403.50 was deposited into his bank accounts through companies linked to him and his family.
