The Maldives Parliament has voted to dismiss Criminal Court Judge Hussain Faiz following a recommendation from the Judicial Service Commission.
The JSC sent the dismissal request to Parliament last month. The Judiciary Committee reviewed the case and backed his removal.
The committee’s report passed with 56 votes in favour, while 8 MDP MPs voted against it.
The JSC ruled that Faiz violated the Constitution and laws in ordering the detention of a suspect in a drug case. The decision also noted concerns over repeated releases of Halimath Lamha Abdul Raheem, arrested in the murder case of Filipino nurse Mary Grace.
Faiz is now formally removed from his post.
