The Maldives has signed the UN Convention against Cybercrime, strengthening international cooperation to combat growing digital threats.
The signing took place following parliamentary approval. Prosecutor General Abbas Shareef confirmed the decision, calling it a major step toward protecting citizens, infrastructure, and the economy. The Prosecutor General’s Office also highlighted the milestone on social media.
Speaking at the High level Plenary, Abbas said the Maldives aims for the digital economy to contribute 15% of GDP by 2030. He linked the effort to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s “Maldives 2.0” vision for a transparent and efficient digital ecosystem.
He also noted the establishment of the National Cyber Security Agency, which will safeguard national systems and promote secure digital growth.
Once in force, the treaty will enable stronger international partnerships and enhance the Maldives’ capacity to prevent and respond to cybercrime.
