United States President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Hamas have agreed to the first phase of a ceasefire plan aimed at ending the two year Gaza conflict.

On October 8, 2025, President Trump announced that Israel and Hamas have agreed to the first phase of a U.S. proposed peace deal. The deal calls for the release of all Israeli hostages. It also requires Israeli troops to withdraw to a designated line in Gaza. Trump said he will travel to Egypt this weekend to sign the agreement.

The plan also includes the release of all Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, both living and deceased. It proposes transferring Gaza’s governance to an independent authority. A Palestinian committee will take over operations.

So far, about 67,000 Palestinians have been killed in the conflict. Many have lost their homes. Widespread hunger affects the region. The international community has expressed cautious optimism about the ceasefire.

The agreement followed indirect talks in Egypt involving U.S., Qatari, and Turkish officials. While the deal is a major step toward peace, challenges remain. Key issues include Hamas’ disarmament and Gaza’s future governance.
