Police Warn of Potential Planned Violence at MDP’s Rally

The Maldives Police Service has cautioned that the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) planned anti-corruption rally in the capital this Friday could turn violent, citing intelligence reports of gangs being mobilized to incite unrest and damage property.

In the statement, police said they had received intelligence that gangs may be used to incite violence, break away from the approved route, and damage property. They stressed that such actions would not be tolerated and that maintaining order and safety remains their priority.

The rally, called Lootuvaifi”, is set to take place Friday night at the Artificial Beach. MDP says the protest is aimed at highlighting alleged corruption by the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) administration.

In the statement, police said the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act and its amendments lay out the rules for peaceful assembly, while the Constitution guarantees the right to freedom of assembly under Article 32. They added that ensuring safety during lawful gatherings remains a priority, but warned they will not allow any unrest or damage to property.

Police said intelligence reports suggest attempts to break from the approved route, send out groups of gang members into the streets, and cause damage to property. They said such actions would not be allowed, stressing that maintaining safety and order is their priority.

MDP has been promoting the rally for weeks. The protest has been authorized to take place from Boduthakurufaanu Magu to six major streets in Malé.
