The Maldives Police Service has rejected claims of brutality during the 16 September protest outside the People’s Majlis, saying officers acted with restraint and professionalism.

Protesters gathered near the Majlis from early morning. Police were deployed to secure the outer perimeter, maintain traffic flow, and protect MPs and the public.

The protest was deemed unlawful under Section 24 of the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act, as no permission had been granted and the Majlis is not a designated protest site.

Police stated:

  • Officers issued warnings when some protesters tried to breach barricades.
  • Police say they used maximum restraint.
  • Officers relied on communication and guidance.
  • Protesters were dispersed in line with protocol.
  • Roads and access points were cleared, allowing Parliament sessions to continue.

Their Position:

  • Police deny using excessive force.
  • They say a viral image shared in media is misleading.
  • They stressed that the photo was taken at an angle that does not reflect the overall conduct of the operation.

Police reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding constitutional rights while stressing the need to balance those rights with maintaining public order. The Professional Standards Command has opened a review into the recent protest operation, with the assurance that any breach of protocol will result in disciplinary or legal action. Authorities also extended their gratitude to the public for their cooperation.
