B. Dhonfanu Land Reclamation Project Cancelled Following Public Request

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the land reclamation project in B. Dhonfanu will not proceed, despite signing an agreement for it three weeks ago.

In a post on X today, the President said the project was initially approved at the request of the island’s residents. However, he has now been informed that the project is no longer supported.

“Therefore, I announce that the government will not proceed with the land reclamation of that island. The relevant ministry will officially notify the council by letter today,” the President stated.

A petition calling for the project to be halted continues to circulate, citing potential negative impacts on the ecosystem and environment of the B. Atoll Biosphere Reserve.

The government had awarded the project to MTCC on August 13 for approximately 215 million rufiyaa. The plan was to reclaim 13.59 hectares of land.

President Muizzu emphasized that his government undertakes development projects only when requested by the people. “Our government works in close collaboration with the people, pursuing the projects and goals they prioritize,” he said.
