The Maldives and China exchanged 11 key agreements on Tuesday aimed at strengthening cooperation in areas such as economic development, infrastructure, capacity building, and renewable energy. The agreements were signed at the Wangfujing Hilton Hotel in Beijing during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s official visit to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit, at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The President’s Office described the deals—including multiple Memoranda of Understanding—as a reflection of both nations’ shared commitment to advancing sustainable development and mutual prosperity. The agreements underscore the intention to expand collaboration under the Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership.
In bilateral talks, President Xi reaffirmed China’s full support for the Maldives’ development agenda, while both leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation in trade, security, and people-to-people ties.

President Muizzu also delivered a speech at the SCO Plus meeting, positioning the Maldives as a climate-conscious, digitally ambitious nation. He highlighted the country’s “Maldives 2.0” vision and called for greater inclusion of Small Island Developing States in global decision-making.
On the sidelines of the summit, President Muizzu held separate meetings with several leaders, including Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. He is also scheduled to participate in commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
