President Muizzu Arrives in China to Take Part in SCO Summit

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has arrived in Beijing to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit.

According to the President’s Office, he was received at Beijing Capital International Airport by China’s Minister of Emergency Management, Wang Xiangxi, Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Kong Xianhua, and Maldivian Ambassador to China Dr Fazeel Najeeb. An Honour Guard and cultural performance were held in his welcome.

During the visit, President Muizzu is scheduled to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping and other world leaders, while also taking part in high-level engagements linked to the summit, the President’s Office confirmed.

Chinese media report that leaders from 26 nations will participate in the SCO Summit, which is set to take place this Sunday and Monday. Attendees include Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Maldives currently holds the status of dialogue partner within the SCO.

This marks President Muizzu’s second visit to China since assuming office. His first trip was in January last year, during which the Maldives and China signed 20 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs).
