His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu departed for an official visit to the People’s Republic of China on Friday, at the invitation of His Excellency President Xi Jinping, to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit.
During the trip, President Dr Muizzu will hold bilateral discussions with President Xi Jinping as well as other foreign leaders. He will also take part in several high-level sessions of the SCO Summit. Significantly, the President is scheduled to address the SCO Plus meeting, where he will highlight the need for strengthened multilateral cooperation in tackling global issues such as climate change, economic fragmentation, and rising geopolitical tensions.
The SCO, established in 2001 by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, is a regional organisation focused on political, economic, and security collaboration across Eurasia. Today, it has grown into the world’s largest regional body by geographic coverage and population, comprising 10 member states, along with multiple observer states and dialogue partners. The Maldives currently participates as a dialogue partner of the SCO.
