Abdul Raheem Abdulla, Speaker of the People’s Majlis, addressed the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Istanbul, calling for stronger international cooperation to address conflict, inequality, and climate change.
Speaking on the theme “Nurturing Hope, Securing Peace and Ensuring Justice for Future Generations,” the Speaker highlighted the vital role of parliaments in responding to global challenges and translating public needs into effective laws and policies.
He stressed the importance of empowering youth and women through improved access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities, as well as greater inclusion in decision-making.
The Speaker also emphasized peace, dialogue, and parliamentary diplomacy as key tools for strengthening international stability and cooperation.
On climate change, he warned of its severe impact on small island developing states like the Maldives, urging urgent global action and stronger support for vulnerable countries.
He underlined that justice and sustainable development depend on strong democratic institutions, accountability, human rights, and the rule of law.
Hon. Abdul Raheem also highlighted reforms within the People’s Majlis, including the introduction of an e-petition system to enhance public participation in the legislative process.
Addressing global conflicts, he expressed concern over rising tensions in the Middle East and other regions, calling for restraint, respect for ceasefires, and peaceful resolution of disputes.
He concluded by reaffirming the Maldives’ commitment to working with the international community to promote peace, justice, and a more secure future for all.
