The Maldives has said areas beyond 12 nautical miles are not under its legal jurisdiction and are considered international airspace.

The Ministry of Defence has made the clarification amid false claims that Maldivian territory is being used for war purposes.

The ministry has said national sovereignty extends up to 12 nautical miles, covering land, waters and airspace. Beyond this limit, airspace is classified as international.

Authorities have explained that while flights are monitored within the Flight Information Region, permission is not required to enter international airspace.

The government has reiterated that it will not allow Maldivian territory to be used to launch attacks in the ongoing Middle East conflict.
