Road modernisation in Maamendhoo has officially begun, with work starting on 24 March.
The government has awarded the project to the Road Development Corporation (RDC). Officials launched the works at a special ceremony on the island.
The project will cost around USD 8.9 million. RDC will complete the work within 730 days under a design-and-build agreement.
The project includes paving 11 roads covering 5.47 kilometres. It will also add drainage systems and street lighting.
Residents have long raised concerns over poor road conditions, especially for pedestrians.
