The Prosecutor General’s Office has decided not to pursue charges against seven individuals arrested during the MDP’s “Lootuvaifi” protest in Malé on October 3.
The PG Office announced today that it will not press charges against those detained from the October 3 protest. Eight people were arrested that night. Six of them were remanded and later released on the 19th of last month.
Police accused the group of committing criminal offenses. The seven individuals include former MPs Yaugoob Abdulla and Yasir Abdul Latheef, Maafushi Council President Hassan Solah, along with Hussain Shakir, Azeem Ali, Ali Juman, and Mohamed Halaf Ibrahim.
Police requested charges for intentionally obstructing law enforcement officers and obstructing justice. The PG Office said it does not see public interest in prosecuting them. It stated that the alleged acts were carried out while exercising a constitutional right. No one was injured. No property was damaged.
The PG Office added that police are still investigating another 10 suspects linked to the same protest. A separate charging decision will follow once that probe is complete.
